Power Yoga Playlist Edit

I finally had time to sit down and make a new playlist for the power vinyasa class I teach. Honestly, it wasn't so much that I "had time" as it was that I was fairly certain if I played it one more time in my Tuesday night class my students would go insane. Or maybe think I didn't care about them or was lazy or one of many other insecurities that can arise in regard to teaching yoga. There is a reason I play this Power Yoga Playlist so often, though. It was the first playlist I made, and it was made specially for the first class I ever taught. When I created it, I assumed (I was wrong, you know what they say about people who assume, oops!) that I would probably make a new one every week and it would get easier with time because it wouldn't feel so incredibly important. I spent hours, days really, selecting the perfect songs and then arranging and re-arranging them into what I hoped would be a playlist that both followed and inspired my students through the arc of the class. I tried it on and practiced the sequence to make sure it was just right. There were some tears involved.
There are two schools of thought when it comes to playing music in yoga classes. Some purists believe that silence is necessary to experience the full process of moving inward on the yoga mat and that the addition of music is a Western distraction from the more spiritual aspects of the practice. I don't entirely disagree. However, isn't learning to go inward in a world full of noise and distractions also one of the many benefits of a yoga practice? I believe in meeting your students where they are and leading a class that is genuinely authentic to you. So I play music. I find it both motivating and relish the feeling of a favorite song coming on while flowing to the beat of the music and my own breathing. It doesn't resonate with me to pretend to be someone I'm not just because I'm a yoga teacher. Personally, my skin crawls when I am in a yoga class and out of nowhere the young, midwestern teacher is leading us to "om/aum" in loud unision. Not to be judgmental, but I find it hard to believe that I am the only person sitting in a yoga class in eastern North Carolina who could do without another "om" for my entire life. And I don't even want to get myself started on kirtan (the repetitive chanting music that never ends. Ironically, a friend of mine who is also a yoga teacher posted a video of "The Song That Never Ends" from the kids show Lambchop this morning and that is the only thing I heard in my head all morning, including during a yoga class). I know yoga teachers aren't supposed to say this, but I hate it and if I ever knew when it would in fact end, then I would probably have walked out of a few classes. It is only the hope that I am overreacting and it will be done soon that has ever kept my ass firmly glued to my mat. You will never hear any of that in one of my classes. What you will hear is precise language as you're guided through a power vinyasa flow, gentle alignment cues, and on more days than not - this playlist that I love listening to more than anything. I love it so much I listen to it not only in yoga class, but when I go running and on the rare occasion I make it to the gym to lift. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Comment below and let me know your favorite songs. I can't wait to hear them!
Healthy High Protein Avocado Tuna Toast
February 11, 2018
This might be the perfect lunch. Lunch is that meal of the day I want to invest an absolute minimal amount of time in and also be extremely satisfied from. If it isn't delicious, I will still be hungry. Bonus points for not derailing my healthy eating for the day. I like to leave that for dinner, and if healthy habits were tickets to save up and cash in, then I want wine. But I digress, back to lunch.
As a reformed delivery addict, convenient lunches are absolutely essential. Before moving to North Carolina with my husband two years ago, I basically subsisted on the healthy delivery options in my downtown Los Angeles neighborhood. Moving to the south was quite the adjustment, and one that necessitated changing up my midday eating habits. Thankfully, I discovered Thrive Market just as quickly as I discovered how much I loved cooking. (If you haven't, Thrive Market is amazing! They're a membership based online natural and organic market with prices 25-50% lower than traditional retailers, and free shipping on orders over $50). Basically, they saved my ass when I was unceremoniously told I wasn't in Kansas anymore. And by Kansas, I mean SoCal. Anyway, I digress, but my point is that convenience is super key. This recipe is perfect because it is super fast to make (and can be made ahead if you're the meal prep
type).
And did I mention avocado!
High protein (low-calorie) tuna combine with healthy fats from avocado and olive oil to fill you up quick and it is just so craveable and delicious. Lemon is good on basically everything and gives this open-faced sandwich a nice tart kick. Nom nom nom... I could eat this every day.

Manifest the Perfect Bath
February 10, 2018
I appreciate auspicious moments and want to believe there's a little bit of magic in the air say, for a little manifestation around a new moon or reflection and completion around a full one. (Although really, anytime is a good time). Oftentimes when I realize a lunar event is about to occur I declare I will spend the evening doing something intensive with sage (but never again one with palo santo after the infamous New Years fire of 2016 that took the life of my entry table) and indulging in self-care rituals like an essential oil
My experience with yoga has taught me the benefit in finding authentic ways to give in to the universe and to sometimes try the crazy sounding one; like that one time I finally made a vision board that would then be hid under my couch whenever company came over and still somehow eerily began to shape my life into what I wanted it to be. Friends often see a correlation between my astrological sign (Cancer!) and full moons. So after a pretty intense weekend - the good news I got accepted into the degree program of my dreams; the bad, my husband was involved in a crash that wrecked my car, but thankfully no one was hurt - I have decided that this is the full moon where I finally do some full moon sh*t! Now what to do...
Full Moon (Anytime) Manifestation Ritual
Cleanse, Create and Meditate
Cleanse: Many spiritual gurus recommend cleansing your body before engaging in a manifestation ritual. This is about getting your head in the game to manifest your hearts desires which is the ultimate in self-care. Personally, nothing feels more spiritually indulgent than drawing a warm bath and mixing in some of my favorite essential oils
, placing some of my favorite crystals around the tub and pouring myself a glass of red wine. (This is an example of creating a ritual that resonates with you, though. For me, nothing means self-care like a warm bath and a glass of preferably, organic and sulfate-free red wine. Find what feels authentic to you and don't worry if using shampoo as bubble bath or blasting metal is what does it for you).
Create: Find a spot in your home that allows you to feel centered and is away from any distractions. In my case, this means any room that I can lock my three pets out of. I happen to be in love with my bed, but it could be the floor of your office, in front of the fireplace or outside on a patio or even in nature. (Sometimes when I am near the ocean I can really feel the tides and if you're lucky enough to be near a beach this would be absolutely delightful to experience). If you have sage then this is the time to do a smudging ritual of your space. The whole thing won't be ruined though if you, like me, don't just keep a stash of the stuff lying around for when the mood to smudge strikes. I turn on my himalayan salt rock lamp
, drop some essential oils in my diffuser
and light a few more candles just because I love them. I also like to light some incense in the main room of my home to create a seamless experience when the ritual is over.
Meditate: For the longest time I would instantly tune out when I saw the word meditate. It just wasn't my marmalade. Throw in a single "AUM" and I'd be running for the hills. I tried to brush off the pervasiveness of meditation on my yogi conscience by explaining that I believed in movement as a form of meditation. Practicing asana was my meditation, don't you see? Then I discovered Headspace. This app promises to get you going on the path with a reasonable time commitment for a meditation-phobe of just 10 minutes per day. I love the meditations and they make them so accessible. I have found that pulling up a one-off meditation form their extensive library and popping in some headphones works best for me (and I was oh-so-wrong about my yoga practice being complete without it).
Manifest: Chanting, writing down mantras and lighting them on fire and don't even get me started on Kirtan... these are all things that fall solidly into the pile that is not for me. What does resonate is journaling. The full moon is all about letting go and release. I realized when I opened up my journal and thought about what I wanted to manifest in terms of what I needed to let go that I didn't need to come up with anything original on the fly. I already knew. Journaling about it was a way to strengthen my commitment and explore my feelings about what I was letting go. Examining what was and was not serving me right now in my life also opened up space to confidently pursue more of what does.
I hope sharing my ritual for a full moon manifestation helps you to come up with some of your own! Share with me what resonates with you and what you come up with!
